Silver City Town Council unanimously adopts resolution upholding civil
liberties and opposing unconstitutional activities sanctioned under
anti-terrorism legislation including the Patriot Act
SILVER CITY, NV - The American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada (ACLU)
today applauded passage of a resolution by the Silver City Town Council
upholding its constituents civil liberties by urging congress to roll
back the overreaching portions of the USA PATRIOT Act and related
anti-terrorism legislation. The resolution also asks the Lyon County
Commission and the Lyon County Sheriff to publicly clarify that they
will protect the individual freedoms of all its citizens and residents
in the face of intrusive federal policies adopted since 9/11. The
pro-civil liberties resolution adopted by Silver City contains similar
language as the resolutions unanimously passed two months ago by the
City of Sparks and last year by the council members of the City of Elko.
Adopted by a unanimous vote, the Silver City resolution is the fourth in
the state of Nevada, following resolutions adopted by Elko County, the
City of Elko, and the City of Sparks, and has become the 398th
jurisdiction to oppose the excessive portions of the Patriot Act in the
country. Over 62 million Americans are now covered by these resolutions
across the nation.
"Silver City has now formally joined this unprecedented national
grassroots effort to protect Americans from federal intrusion and abuse
authorized under the Patriot Act. This effort has been gaining momentum
across Nevada and the Silver City Council must be praised for its
leadership in helping preserve the freedoms embodied in the Bill of
Rights," said Laura Mijanovich, the Northern Nevada Coordinator of the ACLU.
The resolution is a direct response to the USA PATRIOT Act, the federal
anti-terrorism bill that was rushed through Congress, with little
debate, in the weeks following September 11, 2001. Although some
provisions in the bill are non-controversial, others expand government
surveillance and law enforcement powers far beyond what is necessary to
catch terrorists while drastically reducing checks and balances thus
opening the door to government abuse.
