Matthew Bowles, the National Field Organizer for the ACLU Washington DC
legislative office, will discuss the USA PATRIOT Act and related
anti-terrorism legislation this coming Wednesday at UNR. Mr. Bowles will
examine the state of civil liberties after 9/11 and how recent
legislation erodes the rights and liberties guaranteed to everyone under
the U.S. Constitution.
There will also be a showing of the thirty minute, nationally syndicated
TV show, _ACLU Freedom Files: Beyond the Patriot Act_. The film examines
real cases of innocent people who have been swept up in the government's
dragnet to capture suspected terrorists.
On the heels of the City of Sparks adoption of a resolution opposing the
USA PATRIOT Act and as America unites to oppose the overreaching
provisions of this family of legislation, Mr. Bowles, has worked closely
with both well known conservative and liberal organizations. Matt is an
extremely knowledgeable and energetic speaker. Coupled with his
experiences of bringing together people and groups from opposite sides
of the political and social spectrum and the real life drama of
America's "War on Terrorism" this event should make for a fascinating
and informative evening.
