TORTURE IS UN-AMERICAN - HALLOWEEN DEMONSTRATION AGAINST TORTURE

RENO, NV – Brute physical force and humiliation await United States servicemen and women taken into custody by enemies and the U.S. may no longer invoke the protection of international human rights laws.

"We have failed to follow the golden rule: treat others as we would like to be treated," stated Alexanderia Mason a Reno based attorney and Tuesday's demonstration organizer.

Twenty-seven Iraqi and Afghani detainees in U.S. custody are now dead by asphyxiation, strangulation, hypothermia or blunt force beating – forms of torture acknowledged and used by the United States Government.

On October 31st demonstrators - costumed as the dead - will haunt the Bruce R. Thompson Federal Building and Courthouse in support of U.S. troops abroad and international human rights laws. In question is the newly enacted Military Commissions Act, which overrides the Supreme Court’s recent attempt in Hamdan v. Rumsfeld to uphold the humane treatment standards of the Geneva Convention. The legislative and executive branches have endorsed the use of interrogation practices involving torture and will allow evidence obtained by torture to be admitted against detainees in secret military trials where detainees may not even be permitted to hear the evidence against them.

"Even retired military leaders and former officials of the Department of Defense, in a letter to Congress earlier this year, warn that violating the Geneva Convention prevents the U.S. from enforcing it against enemies who will likewise degrade, humiliate and physically brutalize our military personnel in their custody," Mason added.
