HELP STOP PASSAGE OF THE REAL ID ACT, (H.R. 418), THE PROVISIONS OF
WHICH WOULD UNDERMINE EVERYONE'S PRIVACY RIGHTS, STRIP IMMIGRANTS
OF
BASIC CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS, AND REMOVE IMPORTANT SAFEGUARDS AGAINST
ABUSES BY THE EXECUTIVE POWER

ACT NOW! *

The REAL ID Act (H.R. 418) has been wending its way through Congress
for the past several months. It has already passed in the House of
Representatives and is expected to be considered in the Senate as part
of the Iraq Supplemental & Tsunami Appropriations Bill tomorrow!!

By tying the Real ID Act to Iraq- and Tsunami- related legislation,
supporters of its provisions hope to make opposition more politically
costly and defeat less likely.

The REAL ID Act poses a serious threat to constitutional and other
legal rights of immigrants and the rest of the public without actually
enhancing safety or security. Among other things, the Act would allow
for the suspension of Habeas Corpus for first time since the Civil
War; it grants the Secretary of Homeland Security sole authority to
suspend all laws of the nation without judicial review; it creates a
de facto national ID by nationalizing state drivers licenses and it
empowers the Secretary of Homeland Security to erect federal
checkpoints inside our borders.

The Act would also severely diminish protections afforded to longtime
legal residents, recent immigrants, and asylum-seekers by unreasonably
raising the burden of proof for those seeking asylum based on
political or religious persecution. It forces asylum-seekers to get
corroboration from the very officials they claim are persecuting them.

WE MUST STOP THIS BILL -- IT IS A PLAINLY UNCONSTITUTIONAL ASSAULT ON
THE RIGHTS OF IMMIGRANTS AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC -- PLEASE ACT NOW!
