In his new book, Don't Think of an Elephant! Know Your Values  and Frame the
Debate, world-renowned linguist George Lakoff  praises the Apollo Alliance
as an innovative, big-pictured initiative that addresses a variety of issues
critical to the election cycle.

"...Unlike the right, the left does not think strategically. We
think issue by issue. We generally do not try to figure out
what minimal change we can enact that will have effects across
many issues. There are a very few exceptions. For example, at
the present moment there is a strategic proposal called the New
Apollo Initiative.

"....In short, a massive investment in alternative energy has
an enormous yield over many issue areas. This is not just about
energy; it is about jobs, health, clean air and water, habitat,

stable and secure; Rebuild our communities and invest in the
industries of tomorrow, so America can lead the world in clean
technology, renewable energy, and efficiency; Restore and
preserve our environment for present and future generations.

Last week three of the nation's most powerful Governors
challenged the Bush administration's failed leadership on
energy.  They called for an "unprecedented national mission to
achieve energy independence within the decade by boldly
investing in efficiency, new technology, and alternative
energy." As our country faces unprecedented challenges to our
economy, our security, and the health of our environment -- as
our communities continue to hemorrhage high quality jobs, and
families face rising prices for gas and oil to heat their homes
-- we need to move our country in a new direction.  America is
facing a major choice, it is time for real national leadership
on energy independence, and a better vision for our country's
future.
