its Effects on Civil Liberties in Post-9/11 America.

RENO, NV - The American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada (ACLU) is
sponsoring an exhibition of political art: “1984 + 20: Art for post-9/11
America.” The exhibition is being hosted by the City of Reno at the
McKinley Art and Culture Center in Reno, where an opening reception for
the artists will be held on October 7, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

"Halloween aside, this is a frightening topic - the loss of fundamental
rights in post 9/11 America" said Laura Mijanovich, of the ACLU of
Nevada. “In the name of national security, Congress has passed
legislation that vastly expands government secret and increases domestic
surveillance powers. The erosion of fundamental rights, including due
process, privacy and free speech has created a climate of fear that is
seriously impacting one of America's core principles—intellectual
expression. Numerous reported stories of exhibitions under federal
investigation show that how art is made, displayed and discussed is now
under close governmental scrutiny. In an array of media, the art pieces
included in the show bring powerful interpretations of this political
climate.”
