Greetings!
This is an informational email from the Nevada Campaign to Defeat the
Patriot Act (NCDPA). There are three events listed in the press release
below.
The UNR event, on Wednesday evening at 7:00 PM, is open to the public.
There will also be a screening of the _ACLU Freedom Files: Beyond the
Patriot Act_. The film examines real cases of innocent people who have
been swept up in the government's dragnet to capture suspected terrorists.
The Nevada Library Association (NLA) conference, on Thursday at 9:00 AM,
is open to ACLU members for the morning keynote address by Matt Bowles.
See below for more on Mr. Bowles.
The community access TV show taping at the Media Center, on Thursday at
7:15 PM, is open to the public. We really need an audience and you will
be able to ask questions of the guests during the show. Please plan to
attend!
See below for more on these three events and a quick overview of
developments in the Patriot Act debate.
Be well,
Bob Tregilus

National ACLU Field Organizer to give keynote address at Nevada Library
Association (NLA) Annual Conference in Reno
RENO, NV - Marking the 4th anniversary of the signing of the
controversial USA PATRIOT Act (USAPA), Matt Bowles, of the ACLU's
Washington DC legislative office will be giving the keynote address at
the Nevada Library Association's Annual Conference in Reno.
Earlier this month librarians were joined in their four-year quest to
protect patrons' lending records by a coalition of high profile national
business groups calling for similar Patriot Act reforms.
In an October 4 letter to Senator Arlen Specter, Chairman of the Senate
Judiciary Committee, the United States Chamber of Commerce, the
Financial Services Roundtable, the National Association of
Manufacturers, the National Association of Realtors, and other groups
stated, "[R]ecords about our customers or our employees, as well as our
trade secrets and other proprietary information [are] too easily . . .
obtained and disseminated under . . . the Patriot Act. It is our belief
that these new powers lack sufficient checks and balances."
While in Northern Nevada Mr. Bowles will discuss the Patriot Act
reauthorization debate—which is scheduled to resume on Capital Hill
today—as well as the grassroots efforts to reform the overreaching
provisions of this family of anti-terrorism legislation. Nearly, 400
jurisdictions across America (including the city and county of Elko and
the City of Sparks), as well as seven entire states, have sent a strong
message to congress that Patriot Act reforms are needed.
Matt Bowles speaking and television appearances while in Reno:
* On Wednesday, October 19 from 7:00 – 9:00 pm, at the University of
Nevada, Reno, Frandsen Humanities Building, Room 108, Bowles will be
addressing student concerns in the presentation, Beyond the Patriot Act:
the State of Civil Liberties in post-9/11 America.
* On Thursday, October 20 from 9:00 - 10:00 am, at Harrah's Reno
(Sammy's Showroom), Bowles will give the keynote address to the Nevada
Library Association's annual conference.
* Later on Thursday, October 20 from 7:15 - 8:30 pm, at The Media Center
(4024 Kietzke LN), Bowles will be taping the cable access television
show Reno Antiwar Coalition Presents.
Mr. Bowles will be available beginning Wednesday after 2:00 pm and
before each of his scheduled appearances in Reno for interviews.
