Background - What is Divine Strake?

The proposed 700 ton Divine Strake explosion, to be
conducted at the Nevada Test Site by the Department of
Energy, will create a 10,000 foot mushroom cloud --
resuspending long-lived radionuclides leftover from
1000 nuclear weapon tests in the fifties and sixties,
putting residents in Nevada and other downwind
communities in danger of radioactive contamination.

Nuclear weapons experts widely agree that the Divine
Strake open-air detonation at the Nevada Test Site
(NTS) will be used to develop tactical nuclear weapons
known as "bunker busters." Divine Strake WILL generate
a large mushroom cloud over Nevada and WILL resuspend
radioactive particles in the soil leftover from
historic atomic tests. This radiation has the
"potential to be transported outside the NTS boundary
by wind, and may contribute a radiological dose to the
public."*

Divine Strake could well ignite a whole new generation
of nuclear weapons and spawn an era when nuclear
testing becomes a reality once again at the Nevada
Test Site on Western Shoshone aboriginal land.

Utah's governor (a Republican) and the mayor of Salt
Lake City - "downwinders" from the Nevada Test Site -
are outraged and held public hearings that drew
hundreds of concerned residents. And at least one Utah
county has issued a formal statement expressing
opposition to Divine Strake and concern for public
safety.*

Nevada's governor and members of our congressional
delegation have been oddly silent on this grave public
safety concern.

As Nevadans we must demand accountability from our
elected officials!

The federal government has performed only a minimal
Environmental Assessment (EA) of the proposed test.
Tribes were not consulted and there has been no
meaningful period for public comment, public hearings,
or enough details about the purpose of Divine Strake.

An full Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) would
remedy these concerns, allow public hearings and a
detailed explanation related to the purpose of the
Divine Strake detonation.
